To celebrate its 70th Anniversary and support photography aficionados in Vietnam and around Asia, T&A retainer client Canon recently organized the unique photo contest “Canon Photo Marathon Asia 2007” in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi August. This was the camera maker’s second ‘Marathon’ in the country following the smashing success of last year’s initial run. Both series opened the field to the most inspiring work, drawing talented photographers to demonstrate their best eye for a shot. The competition unlocked Vietnam’s photo creativity, allowing everyone, pros and amateur’s alike, to show their work.
The Hanoi competition came on the heels of a previous round in HCMC. It received plenty of attention from the photography community and the media. T&A also arranged an interview with Canon Singapore Chief Rep in Vietnam, Mr. Mike Asao, and world-renowned photojournalist Time Page, who headed the judging.
As PR partner, T&A needed to help Canon ‘inspire’ and fascinate contestants (and viewers) while generating significant media attention. We provided communications, prepared press kits, invited reporters from leading publications, and also sent press packets to all prominent local media. Our strategy concentrated on drawing constant public attention with a three-stage plan: pre-event, event, and post event. In order to maximize the publicity we also engaged online media to create a photo series that touched readers with a deeper view on the day-long show.
With continuous media pitching before, during, and after the event, T&A helped Canon make Photo Marathon Asia 2007 an unqualified success.
Challenge: To make this year’s photo contest attract more contestants and get attention from the masses; to highlight this photo contest as a major event in the country.
Idea: Highlight the idea that this contest is open to everyone, all ages and occupations, professional and amateur.
Result: Canon Photo Marathon Asia 2007 was a smash success and this year’s contestants were double that of last year. Media outcomes were far better than expected with 50 print/online items and four TV spots.
